một lời trấn an

Mongolian Horde Inside

The kids have left. Piercing through the east-side slope of bush,
fresh, morning-scented sun rays are reaching me, the silver birch, the lemon tree,
the mind is still trying to grasp

kids, a house in a far city, a compact standard double-room
a city I still recognised, but houses and streets
and the poor people - where are they?
A sweep of a hand had removed the contents
leaving a huge open shelf.
No people left, gone were their belongings
heaps of jumbled up valises and trunks, torn-up sampans
lowered marine flag-masts, useless
yesterday freight ships.

They will come!
    One was waiting
a void is rising, inside, I knew
                    someone is having
an open heart surgery, and looking.

Couldn’t say I am not afraid
I was that very person
Soon they will be, right here - how soon?

Then, in the height of my own tribulations, out of blue, from the street
You stepped in. You must pardon me if I say I didn’t know you,
But how could I forget your face from then on
Face of a young man
gentle and calm, resolved, assured
You, looked at us, a kind smile in your eyes, and simply said:
‘It would be all right.’

Right, but not for You.
A car stopped in middle of the intersection, carrying You
surrounded by men in a jeep, black and armed.
You were so alone. You, were taller than the rest,
Standing up-straight and bare-headed.

History dictates irreversibility - nothing could escape:
this city, this segment of street, this corner, this corner right inside
the identity of each citizen, each family, its relations, and the rest
what could be laid bare was now indeed,
under an unwashed sheet , in middle of a crude surgery.

Guns pointing at your chest
That horde of heavily armed men was tough
They weren’t as good as the Mongolians under Kublai Khan, one might argue.
But in wars, where the killing power reigns, the most ready to kill will simply be the best.

Was it the firepower, or the intensity of a chest, but the fire
at almost point-blank - who,
who could measure the sheer impact?
You were thrown in the air, from the left of my view
To the right of me, a full blast of blue.

Blue then ran from a portrait of You, through the city streets, street after street, no jumping-over’s, but kept to the surface
to the end of what the eye could see.

*

Everyone must, and will, escape their own shady-ghosts,
I got out of sleep with the image of your face.
That, at the point of firing
flesh being hit,
the throw of 120 degree
the after-blast, the sky-blue calmly streaming down the river, then the sea.

*

Peace established, reality regained.
So calm, serene almost, now a Mongolian landscape.
Right here, where I stand
The Mongolian warriors inside has headed home, weapons packed up

Kids running from the glistening lemon tree
who had been sick, was treated by trim-and-cut’s
to the last five branches, years ago
now revived, this season did kindly truly give kids lemons
(in their first visit) -
I thank You.

A dry season at the projected limits, cooling and crystal-clear
one could almost touch
the low-lying sea
the calm, the poplars
the sky, the sweeping
steppes.
