Confession of a poor artist / Tâm-sự của một hoạ-sĩ tầm-thường

The Modernist Patriarch John Cage was once presented with a musical composition for piano and was asked if he could perform it. Mr. Cage also a Zen enthusiast shook his head and admitted that the piece was too difficult for him. He was not alone.

Có lần John Cage, lãnh-tụ fong-trào ngệ-thuật mới Ở Hoa-kì và cũng là người hâm-mộ Thiền, đứng trước một bản-đàn viết cho Zương-cầm đã lắc đầu thú-nhận là quá khó đối vời ông. Đâu chỉ có một mình ông!

I passed the entry exam to the National Academy of Fine Arts, without formal training, due to my naturally superior Academic (human figure) drawing modeled after The Paris Beaux Arts tradition. At the age of nineteen I had a chance to view a huge collection of deluxe Art Books displayed at the Ziên-hồng Conference Room, in Saigon. I was completely overwhelmed by the works of da Vinci. They were too difficult for me.

I had recourse to Cézanne, Matisse, Modigliani, Chagall, and to a host of abstract painters simply to hide my emotional distresses and my inferiority in art. I confided in some of my friends that I would give up my dream to be an artist. However, thanks to the generous support of my friends I could still do painting, narrowly to escape poverty and the encroaching destruction of war. I also had many setbacks, one of which was the hurdle of South Vietnam, which denied me the passport to Italy with full scholarship of Rome Academy.[*]

Although a failed artist, I have always had in my mind many questions about art and creativity, especially about the water molecule effect in da Vinci’s paintings. Although brilliant in classroom I had only found myself an ignorant in life. I tried to make friend with a school girl who flatly told me that outside education and painting I would be a “dead person”. What had worried me then was not about her dire opinion, but that how could I survive creatively and intellectually to avert such a destiny that might do a number on me? Then as a poetaster I made a poor metrical composition that is survived by fragments.

I have a fear, alone on the avenue of Necropolis – twilight

Fear to see my house without a single soul, my hometown I would not return.

Fear on the road, of calamitous rain, sun or gusty wind

Fear to see in swaying turfs of grass the cold of my loneliness

Fear to see cloud drop on farmland, and

Fear if in a moment time would cease to exist …

But it was my strong will of survival to resist the number of misfortune. Well, at least I had a beautiful girl friend that I met again after a few decades. She graciously sent me a letter and I quote: “After all your accomplishment is commendable! I did not understand why I had been crying very long after reading your letter!” Is that true? Why? I am still unable to handle the riddle of da Vinci. I make abstract paintings like an act of champing, unaware of the difference between sub-consciousness and ignorance. But when I paint grass on meadow I can feel the existence is there in tune with nature. I see what I can achieve and what I cannot. After all the disparity of achievement and underachievement has given me true joy of life. Was that also true to Fan Kuan? I have been mulling over the case of Walter Benjamin, who despite creating his final great work, of almost one thousand pages, on Charles Baudelaire, had never seen light at the end of tunnel!
