AVANT-PROPOS

AVANT-PROPOS

As a keen reader of Hoàng Ngọc Biên for many decades, I would like to say immediately that this book is not a representative collection of his literary works. It is only a small group of Hoàng Ngọc Biên’s stories and poems originally written in Vietnamese, occasionally chosen and translated into English by his dear friend Hoàng Thạch Thiết. Therefore, this book displays but a small corner of Hoàng Ngọc Biên’s artistic output.

At his octogenarian age, Hoàng Ngọc Biên has left his fingerprints in many fields of the arts. He has published many books of poetry, stories and essays. He has created and exhibited many paintings and artworks. He has translated hundreds of literary works of various genres from French and English into Vietnamese. He has also composed songs and written plays. Indeed, he is a polyartist in the truest sense of the word.

Hoàng Ngọc Biên has expanded his talents into many artistic disciplines, and everything done by him is not only aesthetically exquisite but also conveys a deep sense of humanity, be it a poem, a story, an essay, a painting, a play or a song. In the Vietnamese world of arts, Hoàng Ngọc Biên is often seen as one of the pioneers because of his new and experimental approaches to literary and visual creativities. However, his works are not there to cause shallow shocks or to inflict temporary dazzling effects. Instead, each of his works would silently and slowly penetrate your mental barriers, reach to your deepest core and emit long-lasting resonances.

In his creative process, Hoàng Ngọc Biên is a profound observer and an exquisite describer. He observes the world through a microcosmic view and describes it from various angles, often in slow motion and sometimes with psychological close-ups. Reading his poems and stories, we often see an individual living in a lonely situation, things existing in a small location, and incidents happening in the present moment; but his writing style — using unostentatious language and approachable sentence structure, always benign and delicate in manner, often melancholic and contemplative but not lacking a sense of humor, and without pretending to be philosophical or prophetic — somehow makes me unavoidably ponder and visualize a live panorama surrounding the individuals, things and incidents, with its all social, ethical and historical connotations. That is the panorama of more than a generation of Vietnamese people who have lived through — and survived — the long ideological war, the absurd post-war regime, and then the inconsolable exile.

In one of his stories, Hoàng Ngọc Biên writes: “If someone happens to read these lines, and who knows what I’m writing will not survive for them to read...”, and again, “the sun has risen one and a half times, as I wrote, and this is quite possible, though I wrote for the sake of writing (for is there any certainty that what I have written will survive for readers?)” Of course Hoàng Ngọc Biên might have his doubts, but I strongly believe that his works will survive and be read by Vietnamese people of future generations, because his literary legacy is an indispensable part of the literature of Vietnam.

This book is Hoàng Ngọc Biên’s first English publication, and I desire to see many more of his writings be translated and published widely so that they can reach readers around the world.
